Gazing at art has always been a way for me to travel to other worlds in my mind. Growing up in the 80’s, I remember staring at Heavy Metal magazine for hours – I was transfixed by the colors and images. The master of fantasy art is Boris Vallejo, and for decades he has been creating alternate universes in his work. Inside of his world, women have huge muscles, and fight off dragons and other beasts. When you look at Boris’s work, you can see the impact he has had on illustrators within the heavy music community. Today, CVLT Nation would like to celebrate this fantasy wizard with a mammoth art gallery of his work.

Old news. We’ve had a pizza chain in Austin with Vallejo on the walls for 30 years.

Boris Vallejo and his wife Julie Bell rented movies from me 2000-03 when Hollywood Video was in business. I’d see them every Friday. Nice folks.

In most of those the physics and anatomy aspects were pretty ugly and exaggerated. Although a realistic painting style… Some are okay I guess, but his work was quite tacky overall. Take this snapshot as an instance, it sucks! haahah

Frazetta couldn’t stand Boris. He considered him a copycat. Their styles are similar. I think Frank just didn’t want the competition.
