Not only was this my first time shooting in a press pit, but it capped off a glorious year where I also got to see Sleep and Om. Standing 10 feet away from Matt Pike’s guitar stack is kind of like staring directly at the sun.
Four badass dudes from Montreal, and one of the best live bands in Canada. Some friends and I unwittingly shared a bowl with the lead singer/guitarist outside the venue before their set. Minutes later we were inside, blown away by their heavy riffs and effortlessly evil stage presence.
When you shoot with wide, prime lenses, it can be really hard getting decent shots of drummers, especially in larger venues. These guys are a two-piece, so luckily the kit was way upfront on the stage, shrouded in lights, smoke and trippy projections. These two shots also got me hooked on high-speed color films.
I came to see the Vancouver hardcore act White Lung, and these guys were opening. I hadn’t heard of them before but I really loved the singer’s energy and stage presence. Not much of a story, but one of my favorites in black-and-white.
This was my first out-of-town shoot, covering Septic Flesh in Montreal with a writer friend of mine. What ended up really getting my attention that night was the opener, a bunch of Assyrian and Dutch dudes playing exotic, Eastern-influenced black-metal.
These guys play note-perfect doom, colored by horror movie lyrics and analog synths. I love it when the vibe of a band seems to perfectly match up with my shooting style.
