I remember skating before grip tape existed, and I remember when it died its first death. My favorite memories of the sport that changed my life were during the 80’s. The reason being is this was when street skating started to take over, which leveled the skating field. Some of the raddest skaters came from my hood so it was cool seeing them do their thing. One contest that brought them all together was Savannah Slamma. Everyone represented: Neil Blender, Steve Caballero, Chris Cook, Sam Cunningham, Bill Danforth, Gary Scott Davis, Adrian Demain, Eric Dressen, Eddie “El Gato” Elguera, Mark Gonzales, Claus Grabke, John Grigley, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Bryce Kanights, Natas Kaupas, Jeff Kendall, Johnee Kop, John Lucero, Jesse Martinez and the list goes fucking on! Now tune into one of the 1st skating contests ever, the Savannah Slamma, after the jump!
