Call me weird, but I have always considered hardcore a form of soul music. One of the major reasons being that hardcore bands are willing to put every emotion in them into creating such awesome noise! There are other parallels as well: back in the day, jazz and blues musicians had a hard time touring around the States, but they did what they had to do because they were on a mission to bring their music to the people. Does this sound familiar? Since the days of Black Flag, it’s always been about punk bands in vans, touring around the country, playing wherever would have them. In this kind of environment, bands can perform the the type of music that makes them and their community stoked without sacrificing for society at large. Portland’s RAW NERVES has been releasing killer hardcore with a a political message since 2009. Everything that this band has put out is fucking totally rad in 4D. Something about RAW NERVES takes me back to being 13 in Hollywood, watching Stalag 13 or Aggression but with a political slant. This band is the real deal – you can hear that they mean everything that they say and play. They are also open-minded in their approach to their songwriting, which keeps what they create exciting. I’m not going to write a review about one specific record, because their whole catalog rocks. Make sure to go to Inmical Records to peep their releases and their new EP Burnt Skin! What we are going to do is put together a ballistic video essay of them performing, plus a radical photo essay with photos by DonoftheDead, so you can see for yourself that RAW NERVES can rock and shock the nation!
