One of my favorite bands from the ’77 era of punk was the almighty The Damned, because their songs rocked! Their album Damned Damned Damned is a fucking classic – every song on this audio document of awesomeness is a solid tune. Yeah, The Damned owed some of their swagger to The Stooges and even Motorhead, but they brought something new to the game. They were well-versed in writing killer pop punk with a metallic edge. They also had a subversive melodic vibe that ran through many of their songs. I got into them in the early 80’s; we were into hardcore, but there was something about The Damned that me and my homies really loved. They had the sleaze factor down – that was one of those things that made us like them. You’ve got to give respect to Dave Vanian for rocking the deathrock style before there was even a word for it. Then you had Captain Sensible, who brought the weirdo factor that made us all feel that it was cool to be different. Today, CVLT Nation wants to celebrate this band of punk rebels with an epic video essay featuring killer live footage from their golden era. So after the jump, get your neat neat neat on and check how punks used to get down!
