I may like my music fast and mean, but I also can get down with the sludgy and the ugly. Night Terror, one of the best new bands from Rochester, NY, knows how to deliver the grimy, hardcore goods. It’s rare that a band as young and new as this has their sound nailed down as much as Night Terror do, and fortunately, it’s a sound that I just absolutely adore. They definitely have their roots deep in hardcore and sludge metal, with little sprinkles of black metal influence popping up every now and again. I’ve heard these influences clashing in the past, and it never really appealed to me. There always seemed to be too much of one thing. But Night Terror really have their sound worked out and give all these influences enough room to breath and develop in their songs.
For as ugly as this EP is, it starts off kind of…pretty. Clean guitar plucking and atmospheric lead work over a low end bass rumble start off the two-part opener, “Compression//Decompression”. The song has a great progression and build up to the 2nd half, where the band kicks into high gear with some serious heavy riffs. From then on it’s pure aggression for the remaining four tracks. The whole band just sounds huge, especially the drums, which just boom and take up a lot of room in the mix. The guitars, while not being the most up front and visceral, sound good here. The riffs are powerful enough to make it seem like that have that extra bit of meaty production. The recording really does add to the vibe of the band. It’s not polished (at all), there’s nothing shiny or sparkling about it, it’s just a raw, grimy, bassy, gutter dwelling sound. Am I getting my point across yet? That I really really really like this EP? If you haven’t gotten the message yet, I guess you’re hopeless. Listen to it for yourself and support this awesome up and coming band.
