Ever since I can remember, I have been a fan of soul music – meaning music that is created deep within the soul. I have also always been down for the humans that give the middle finger to the system. This is why Johnny Cash’s songs have been a part of my life since I was young. To me, he was a voice for people that this society tried to oppress, and his compositions spoke to the human condition like no other performer. The other night, I watched Johnny Cash – The Last Great American a documentary created by the BBC, and I was almost brought to tears many times throughout the hour-long film. This informative film paints Johnny as the complex person he was, and shows us why his music resonated with so many humans around the world. He was an example of what life really is – never perfect. It’s filled with sunny days that will turn into storms at the drop of a dime, but the sun will rise again. Johnny Cash was revolutionary on so many levels and was really important to the counterculture that gave birth to the underground as we know it.
