Hypnodelic Soundscapes
A Private Realm

I find video art and experimental film fascinating. Unlike many forms of visual art, where you choose your level of interaction with each piece, video art sucks you into it’s world, taking you with it to places that are often disquieting and unsafe. At least, the video art I like does. I appreciate a level of fear in art; it’s the perfect vehicle for reflecting on emotions we avoid in our communications with other human beings. A Private Realm, composed by Tim Hicks, James Sinclair, and Olivia Arthur, is just such a film – one that envelops my senses with images and sounds that are as mesmerizing as they are thought-provoking. A Private Realm is in four movements – Sacred Hole, Come and See, Free the Child Brides, An Omen from No Mans Land – and they blend seamlessly with each other, taking you from tranquil pulsing to hypnotic chaos and back again. It seems like there is a political message in A Private Realm, but it is one that is less obvious while watching than it is in your racing thoughts after the fact. After the jump, watch the Prelude to A Private Realm, and check out some beautiful stills from the film. For your own viewing pleasure, you can pick up the limited edition DVD here – only 100 have been made!
