Holy Mountain Interviews
Jon Nguyen of LYNCH (three)

Interview by Danny Trudell

When I was about sixteen years old, I saw David Lynch’s Wild at Heart and my mind was blown. From a young age, I was seeking stranger, grosser, darker and more obscure films, but Wild at Heart was the first one that really satisfied me completely and I needed more! I instantly delved into the back catalog, watching Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Dune and The Elephant Man, each one it’s own equally strange, violent, beautiful and visually arresting experience. Each one was everything I wanted in a movie, and was not even aware was there for me to want. David Lynch expanded what my expectations of a filmmaker were, as well as what I could and should expect from the movie going experience. Later in life, I read Lynch on Lynch by Chris Rodley, and found David Lynch as a person every bit as interesting and inspiring as I found David Lynch the artist / director. Thankfully, filmmaker Jason S and producer Jon Nguyen found David as inspiring and interesting as I did, and started a documentary series dedicated to exploring his life and art. Here is a short interview with Jon about what we can expect from their third highly anticipated installment to the series.

This is the last day of their Kickstarter fundraising campaign, so it’s your last chance to contribute to their project! Interview and trailer after the jump…

Both you and Jason were the producers of LYNCH (one) and (two), now you’re returning with (three). How did these documentaries initially come about?

We both felt that there needed to be a documentary that took a closer look at David Lynch, both as an individual and an artist.

What is it about David, in your opinion, that draws people not only to his art, but to want to know who he is as a person also?

David seems to have unbounded creativity and an incredible ability to transfer it onto his art. He’s so down to earth, yet his films overflow with so many wonderful ideas and concrete moods.

I know that you guys are taking a different approach with this third film. What should people expect from LYNCH (three) that they did not get in LYNCH (one) and (two)?

Lynch Three will present a unique biographical approach to the subject of David Lynch. Focusing mostly on David Lynch’s formative years–the experiences and influences that have helped to shape who he is today. Over the last 7 years of making this series–our relationship with David has evolved, so the film will reflect that growth.

Both you and Jason worked on “Interview Project,” how was that experience? Also has working on that project affected how you guys approached LYNCH (three)?

Interview Project brought us closer to people across society’s broad spectrum. Meeting different types of people and listening to them, helped to underscore our common bond as human beings. Jason is very keen on using what he learned during Interview Project on this part of the new documentary about David Lynch. LYNCH (one) took a more abstract approach to the fly on the wall style.

How far along is this documentary? Has all the footage been shot and you’re in the editing stages or are you still filming?

We’re editing, shooting, writing and weaving our story on a daily basis. The deeper we dig, the more we find, so we’re constantly tending to a story that keeps on evolving.

Lastly, you guys used Kickstarter to raise the money to complete this film. Does this mean the movie will be completely financed by the fans without the backing of a studio’s money? If this is true, can you tell us the benefits of working this way and how it affected the film?

This movie is only partially financed through Kickstarter. Kickstarter helps to keep the engine running, but we’ve got a lot of distance yet to cover. Kickstarter not only provided us with much needed financial assistance, it also provided us with direct contact to David Lynch’s fans. We’re trying to build an active community on Facebook, so the buzz on Kickstarter spills over to Facebook, allowing us direct communication with fans around the world. It’s important to us that fans of the film are allowed to follow along in the development of the film. Having early seed money from Kickstarter really helps us to keep complete creative control over the material.
