The album cover might very well be the ugliest one I’ve seen in years. Bad enough that there is actually a concept behind it, probably one I do not understand. Anyway, if you don’t let yourself be put off by the artwork you can actually enjoy HEIRS’ newest output Fowl. At least if you’re into instrumental, spheric Postrock. And you should.
When I was writing my thesis last year, Post Rock kept me sane. Especially Russian Circles and Explosions In The Sky. I could just listen to this, without having to care about the lyrics and the vocals, because that’s really distracting while writing a thesis. Maybe my fault that a big percentage of the stuff I listen to has really ugly vocals haha. So, if I’d known HEIRS at this point, they would have been on my playlist as well.
What they do might not be the most innovative kind of Post Rock, but well executed. Extensive long songs, a crystal-clear production and the total devotion to athmosphere is what most other Post Rock bands promote as well. HEIRS add synths here and there, and of course a shitload of guitar effects. They are definetely able to build up tension and keep that up throughout most of the record.
Only at some moments HEIRS run the risk of being a bit too repetitive and too careful of changing the riff. So sometimes Fowl is a bit lengthy and nearly on the brink to get boring. But only at some rare moments, really. After all Fowl a really solid record. Maybe not under the top 10 of its genre but surely good enough for fans of that style.
Here’s a promo video of Fowl, good to get a first impression:
