The conjurer behind Conjurer’s Kitchen, Annabelle de Vetten, has found a way to put her training as a taxidermist, sculptor and painter to work in an amazing way – she creates the most morbid, gruesome and disturbingly beautiful cakes and confections. If you’re someone with grotesque leanings and you need a cake to mark a special occasion, these cakes are something out of your wildest fantasies. de Vetten takes her inspiration from works of classic medical anatomy sculpture, like the wax sculpture of Italian Renaissance artists; her cakes feature Victorian and Lovecraftian references; and more modern pop culture influences, like Hannibal Lecter and The Walking Dead. Each piece is so carefully and realistically rendered, it’s stunning to think that she’s used edible components to create them. Who wouldn’t want to cut a chunk out of a bleeding human belly – and a pierced one at that? What about a dead baby head made out of chocolate, one that looks like its been sitting in formaldehyde for decades? Apparently, the catalyst for Conjurer’s Kitchen was the magic-themed wedding cake she made for her own wedding to her magician husband, and since then she has created some masterpieces. I can’t decide whether I’m more into the BDSM cake, or the “Til Death Do Us Part” skull and bone cake – not that I need a wedding cake, but hopefully someone I know does so I can try one of these! I’ve seen a lot of horror-themed baked goods in my time, and these are by far the most innovative and deliciously disgusting. Check out a huge gallery of her cakes and chocolates below, and if you are based in the UK you can probably get one of your own made.
