Grinding Halt and Suffering Quota. 2 Bands from the same country. 2 Bands from the same town. 2 Bands that like playing fast music. 2 Bands that share members. And still they’re not quite alike.
Grinding Halt will be the most familiar band for most people. The band has been around for a while, released splits with bands like Vuur (RIP), Drainland and Diet Pills, have an LP out and did quite some shows in western Europe already. They blend a variety of genres, ranging from grindcore, powerviolence, sludge and even screamo and to be honest they do it rather excellent. Personally I’m quite the fan of these lads and this might be their best material so far. Not their fastest 3 songs ever, but very atmospheric and to an extent even melodic. And as always the lyrics are in Dutch, so incomprehensive for most of you out there.
Suffering Quota however is a new band, that I only heard by name. They are a nice surprise on this split though. Fast, to the point grind with hints of crust is what is served on side B of this slab of vinyl. More straightforward than their fellow citizens and less “melodic”, leaning to old school Swedish and American grindcore acts even. Puritist grindcore fans will enjoy this side a lot more.
Overall a very good split EP, with Grinding Halt doing what we like them for and a newcomer leaving a very good first impression. Europeans hit Graanrepubliek up for a copy. Americans go to Give Praise Records.
Or you can listen to both sides on the bands’ bandcamps.
