Alerta Antifascista brings together Italian atmospheric black metal act Gottesmorder and German atmospheric sludge/post metal band Red Apollo. Each band offers one song in this release, resulting in thirteen minutes of heavy, intense music.
Gottesmorder from Pisa released their self-titled debut EP back in 2011 through Nojoy Records. Since then Absurd Creature Records, Tokyo Jupiter Records and Le Crepuscule Du Soir Productions have re-released their excellent first offering. In this split, Gottesmorder, unleash their crust infused atmospheric black metal with the “Winds’ Shadow”. Through its six and a half minutes the band manages to build a frozen ambiance filled with desolate riffs. The emotional side of the track is also its strongest point, with the cold-hearted guitar leads fitting in perfectly with the deep deathly growls. The crust vibe beneath the black metal riffing is quite prominent, with the band getting a sincere amount of energy through its primal roots, with the drums are adapting to the different tempos in an excellent manner, providing that extra boost of energy whenever Gottesmorder need it.
Red Apollo on the other hand come in all guns blazing. The band needs little introduction with their debut EP, Quiet as Death, and their full length, Marche Funebre, showing their full potential. Here they bring “Transgression I: The Obsession of the Earth”, which is also the first part of a triptych (the second part “Transgression II: Fear & Devotion” can be found in their split with Sundowning). The atmospheric sludge sound of Red Apollo works brilliantly in combination with their more minimalistic post metal investigations, bringing together an intriguing result. The sheer intensity of the track and its unreal groove are working perfectly with the melodic leads that the band is using in order to enrich their soundscapes, creating a towering construction. The track goes through a variety of different phases, never standing still. From the extreme, fast intro to the heavy groove, to the minimalistic sludge/post moments and back to their aggressive selves, Red Apollo will not tire you; they will simply have you asking for more.
Both bands are excellent in their own way. Gottesmorder with their sorrowful ambiance will bring you to the brink of despair with the “Winds’ Shadow”, and while you are there Red Apollo will push you over with ‘Transgression I: The Obsessions of the Earth”. A truly excellent collaboration.
