George Georgiou Serbia/Kosovo Psychiatric Ward Photo Essay

There are a lot of things we put up on CVLT Nation that are intentionally terrifying, gory and brutal – but no other post I have done yet has shaken me like these photos by George Georgiou taken in psychiatric wards in Serbia and Kosovo between 1999 and 2002. The despair and loneliness in these photos is tangible in a way that makes me nauseas. They are hard to look away from, and trying to imagine the stories behind the lives being lived is painful. There is something tragically beautiful about them at the same, and important to recognize in humanity and history. We are cruel to the weak, and at the same time we tell ourselves that they will inherit.

I understand that, Adam, but you need to understand that not long ago, similar pictures were taken in the USA where there was no war at the time. And individuals were, yes, taken care of, attending to their custodial needs, but not emotional needs, or anything else, but the bare minimum. So no, I will not view anyone like this as “lucky”. I wouldn’t choose that word AT ALL. EVERYONE deserves better.

I have no words. When I was looking, I was thinking, thank god that things have changed for people who have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities….but it was not long ago that in the USA, people with these diagnoses WERE treated this way. But then I read the beginning and this was only a few years ago! My heart is just sick. You are right…we treat the weak this way…and other atrocious ways…..both human and non-human alike. I’ll never be the same looking into the eyes of these individuals. I decided long ago, to dedicate my life to assist individuals, not really so different from those in these photos, to make their lives rich and full of what they want, need, and love. I’ve decided to dedicate my life to being a voice for the voiceless, to both human and non-humans as best as I know how. I look at these photos and by my experience, see the beauty in each and every person here. They ARE individuals……and deserve so much more. Will we ever change? It seems that history does seem to repeat itself in one way or another when it comes to us human beings. At least the ones who should know better. : (
