The years were 1983 & 1984, and San Francisco’s Target Video documented the hardcore punk scene like no one else. It tripped me out while watching these videos – I realized that a corporate giant totally bit the name and logo of this DIY film company! Anyway, looking back at this footage, I can’t put into words how stoked I am that these humans had the foresight to do what they did by recording some of the best footage of 80’s California hardcore. What’s interesting about what they were doing was that not only did they film killer sets, but they also edited political footage from the same era to go along with the band’s lyrics. I remember being in SF in 1984, and when some of my homies recorded sets for Target Video, it was a badge of honor for them. I also really dig the fact that they worked with lesser-known bands just as much as they did with the bigger bands. One misconception about hardcore bands is that they didn’t know how to play their instruments – that’s fucking bullshit! When you see Toxic Reasons rip through their songs, you will realize these dudes could play. Today CVLT Nation wants to highlight some footage from Target Video, featuring unreal live performances by Black Flag, Toxic Reasons, Code of Honor and MDC. So after the jump, hit the bullseye and watch how we used to get wild in the streets!
