Thick, heavy walls of atmosphere are taking over my humanity, and I find myself moving closer to my doom. I’m feeling the effects of the new Flenser Records re-release, entitled Fo(u)r Burials which is actually a four-way doom split featuring Otesanek, Loss, Orthodox and Mournful Congregation. You might think that having a record with four different bands would sound disjointed, but this is far from the case with Fo (u)r Burials. This remastered body of work is totally cohesive and doomtastic! Otesanek are the first band that kicks up the dirt and has my bones quaking. Their featured song, “Seven Are They,” opens with a mammoth riff that kicks you in the chest then crawls down your spine, leaving a trail of blackened feedback. Sonically, they convey a never-ending energy of bleakness, packed with a grand feeling of misery and dread. Underneath the tortured vocals that you know were born in the underworld, this band has a way of drawing you into a world where there is no sun, but you never realize that you are in total darkness. Up next is “(To Pass Away) Death March Toward My Ruin” by LOSS, a 14-minute trip into the cave of funeral doom, where even the bats bleed black. Unholy fuck, I dig this song so much – yeah, it’s creepy as fuck, but it’s also much more that. LOSS are masters at making the listener think that suicide might be an OK option, but you don’t choose it because you want to keep listening to their music. Their guitar work hits notes of sinister joy that almost give you a warm feeling inside. It’s the other instruments that lock the doors of hell behind you, and makes you realize the end might be near. Orthodox’s 18-minute song takes a different approach to apocalyptic sound. Their song “Heritage” has a killer transcendental vibe about it that I find enchanting. The ancient melody on this tune is fucking off the hook – the song is so awesome, you don’t care how long it is because you don’t want it to end! Orthodox’s music will pick up your spirit and transport you to another reality altogether. Mournful Congregation’s song “Left Unspoken” closes out the split, which is perfect because this band’s doom kills you in slow motion. Everything about this composition paints your world in darkness, but it’s their use of dead melody that can only be heard by the living that evokes the dirge. I know there are humans out there like me, that after hearing this album will be in a happy state of mind.
