American Latinos were the glue of the punk scene in the early 80’s on so many levels – not only did they make up some of the sickest bands of the day, but the barrio of East Los Angeles was one of the few neighborhoods where we could have shows. Today they still hold it all the way down for the underground. The best club in Los Angeles right now for rad music is The BLVD & where do you think it is? East L.A. I remember being a teenager in the SoCal punk scene, & the interesting thing was that we never really spoke about what color we were, all we knew is that we were all freaks & that’s all that mattered to us. The reason I bring this up is because when people think of underground hardcore music, usually they think of young white males, but that’s not how we got down in my hood. Anyway, Martin Sorrondeguy, the singer of Los Crudos and Limp Wrist, made an epic film about Latinos in the punk scene called Beyond The Screams. It’s a really thought-provoking documentary that will make you say damn! D.I.Y for Life!
