Encoffination have complemented the release of their second LP O’ Hell, Shine in Thy Whited Sepulchres with a nifty split LP with Australian blasphemers Grave Upheaval. While this collector’s release offers only twelve and a half minutes of music across two songs, both bands’ contributions are excellent and the packaging of the record does every justice to the music.
The A-side consists of Encoffination’s track ‘Inurnment of Fleshless Disembodied Remains’, a hulking rendition of early 90s death/doom. This may very well be the best song I’ve heard from the band, combining the obscure and occult atmosphere they did so well on Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh with a fresh sense of composition.
Flip it over and we’re thrown into Grave Upheaval’s lo-fi death metal; fuzz and filth washes all over the song’s lumbering tempos, fitting right in with contemporary Incantation worship a la Vasaeleth. Grave Upheaval have come a long way since their demo in ’09, with their untitled contribution to this split moving further into the death/doom abyss than the demo material.
It may seem a little pointless being put on an LP – especially with the unusually high asking price – but both of these songs showcase the best that is currently being recorded in the genre. If recent records from bands such as Cruciamentum, Aethyrvorous, Grave Ritual, Vasaeleth or Impetuous Ritual had you wet in all the right spots, this split is worth your time.

I love this site but there has been multiple times when I would like to purchase an album and you guys don’t provide any sort of information on how to obtain the release… Distros people distros!
