Christopher Ulrich sees through the surreal. He envisions a world of vibrant darkness, where evil beauty permeates with the dank stench of decay. Ulrich uses color in a playful way, but that playfulness is a striking contrast against his subjects. His subjects wield their power without mercy, jaws tearing into your flesh and clawed feet dancing on your severed head. Christopher Ulrich’s Demoneater series consists of 15 Doors and 15 Keys, and each piece features a central character – Kali, witches, dragons, all hissing and spitting in your face. However disturbing the images become, what is never lost is a sense of humor, like his mustachioed, snub-nosed cobra penis in his piece Dali (the Great Masturbater). Ulrich has several amazing collections out there in the Internets, but my favorite is the Demoneater series, for it’s combination of creepiness and technique. Not only are the pieces huge (the Doors are literally door-sized), but they are done in oils, which makes for an amazing crispness that rises from chaotic colorful muddiness. And I had to throw in his Magician Tarot for THE LOWBROW TAROT PROJECT, which is Crowley eye candy. After the jump, check out selections from the Demoneater series…
