If you read CVLT Nation regularly, you know that if it was up us we would destroy all genre labels! Case in point: Patrick Hasson is one of the most prolific American songwriters of our generation. He is the creator of at least four different bands and all of them are top notch. Today, we are going to talk about his project Avulse, and the new album entitled We Are All Code. For the sake of classification, we will call this his D-beat Black Metal bastard child. The thing is that these labels do not do the music he makes justice, because it’s the audio intangibles that give Avulse its rad factor. Patrick has a vast library of influences, plus he is smart enough to allow them to bleed the chaos of D-beat in a very organic way. This human writes songs that have the perfect balance of emotive empathy and burnt-to-the-core angst. Avulse is black metal that I want to blast on a sunny spring day, and on a cold dark night. It does not seem that he takes himself too seriously, he is having fun conjuring up some of the sickest music that I have heard in a while. The covers on this record are on point; first is “Hope” by the Descendents & then there is “No Friend of Mine” by Slapshot. Here is another thing about Avulse: he is a big champion of giving his music away for free. So today we are stoked that we will be streaming We Are All Code, plus offering it for download, peep both links below!
