Scion offering this show free and paying the venue and promotion and renting the gear and whatever it is they pay the artists, coupled with Moshpit Tragedy, who probally aren’t making much money running a pay what you want label, are providing US w/ a free show, free records and people in the music “industry” getting paid as well (stage hands, gear rental, box office employees, hell the record store next to the venue and all the food around the venue) is a bad thing? I can see how this type of scenerio could spiral away from “DIY” but this particular event the word FREE is paramount. I think its pretty special. No need to illegally download, no need to pay ticketmaster fees, etc…

So, maybe I’m confused, but I’m pretty sure you can no longer claim DIY when you host corporate events. Just sayin…

I think it’s more about the DIY ethos of the 6 years Moshpit Tragedy has been offering music by donation or free to the public than it is about 1 event in those 6 years. If they turn into Sony after this showcase, I’ll agree with you, but I’m 99.9% sure they aren’t going to. I’m glad their message will get out to more people, and that they’ll have a wider audience for the bands they support!

I agree that a wider audience is cool, but doesn’t the fact that being sponsored by a fucked up corporation, that’s been throwing it’s money at our scene in an attempt to win over new customers somewhat discount however many years you were in business previously?

I mean, offering free music is AWESOME, and to do so without expectation of gain or reward is the pinnacle of DIY forward thinking, but to be corporately funded kind of takes that feeling away, doesn’t it? No gain is made because corporate money just fills in the gaps. It turns something that was an act of kindness into a business plan.

DISCLAIMER: Not to say that MT is currently paid out by Scion, but with the Scion hosted event and acceptance of corporate sponsorship by a lot of current labels, it’s just the way I see things going.

I read in an interview with one of the other label guys, that the labels are not paid for these events. But even if that were the case, do you expect them to live in a cardboard box so people can download their albums for free? I know many labels that actually refer to themselves as DIY who are much more business-oriented.

Punk / hardcore existed well before Scion. We just worked jobs (some we hated) to fund on our bands, labels, etc. Y’know, did it ourselves. It’s tough to get ahead, but no one is living in a cardboard box.

My qualms are not with any individual bands or labels, just the notion that the punk scene is becoming corporately funded. It makes me sad because within the scenes I’ve been and am associated, the politics are always very radical, and letting a blood sucking corporation co-opt your hardcore is not something that would ever happen in a million years, so to see so many supporters of it in the scene is aggravating.

I guess the community is just changing, and it’s something we’ll all have to get used to. Either that or the scene will split into those who support, and those who don’t. These certainly are trying times. Haha.

The conversations are always interesting. It’s good to hear several view points.

PS. I called them DIY, MT didn’t label themselves as such.
