CMJ 2013 is nearly upon us, and CVLT Nation will be there to cover everything metal and unholy. While CMJ isn’t a metal festival, there’s enough metal/grind at the showcases to want to get out to New York City and cause yourself irreparable hearing damage. From Nachtmystium to Godflesh, this year’s CMJ is shaping up to absolutely massive, and we’ll be there to write all about it.
October 16th is the Metal Insider CMJ showcase, featuring acts like Vattnet Viskar, Ramming Speed, Black Anvil, Byzantine, and Nachtmystium. Byzantine hasn’t played NYC since 2007. Vattnet Viskar will be the first band on the bill, supporting their new album. The show is being held at Club Europa.
October 17th is the first of two dates featuring post-metallers Pelican. Part of the Invisible Oranges CMJ showcase, the lineup also features Primitive Man, Aksumite, Radiation Blackbody, and HASJ. The second night, October 18th, features acts like Sanhet, Kings Destroy, Wreck & Reference, Phantom Glue, and Pyrrhon. Both shows are being held at Saint Vitus.
Also on October 18th is the Metal Injection/Metal Sucks showcase. Headlining is massive grind band Fuck the Facts. Supporting them is Fit for an Autopsy, Meek is Murder, Hivesmasher, and Stomach Earth. The show is being held at the Acheron.
October 19th, the last day of the festival, features the mighty post-metal act Godflesh, playing at Irving Plaza. Supporting them will be American Sharks. This is one of those shows I’m desperately looking forward to. After I missed Maryland Deathfest 2012, any opportunity to see Godflesh is an opportunity that cannot be wasted.
An interesting panel is also on tap during CMJ. Focused around metal, it’s an open discussion about the direction metal is heading, talking to artists, fans, labels, and journalists alike.
With a nauseatingly long lineup list and with bands playing in over 80 venues across New York City, CMJ 2013 is beyond “just another music festival”. It sprawls the entire city, engulfing it entirely.
