In 2002 the movie ‘City Of God’ directed by Fernando Meirelles, impressed and shocked the cinematic world at the same time. It tells the story of 2 friends growing up in the suburbian favelas of Rio de Janeiro/Brazil in ‘Cidade de Deus’ (translated City of God) and their separating paths when the one becomes a photographer and journalist while the other one becomes a drug dealer.
The most impressing thing about City of God was that almost all of the characters in the movie were no actors. They were all casted from the streets of Rio to keep the authenticity on film as strong as possible. With no doubt the making of the movie had the strongest impact on those ‘kids’ just as much as it has shaped Brazilian cinema and the portrayal of Brazilian culture all around the world.
In 2012 the documentary ‘City of God – 10 Years Later’ by Cavi Borges and Luciano Vidigal shows what has become of the protagonists of the famed movie. The ‘kids’ who portrayed Dadinho, Bené, and Li’l Zé, as well as the actress Alice Braga and musician and actor Seu Jorge talk about how it changed their lives, to the better or not that good, or if it changed anything at all.
The complete documentary is to be released end of 2012. You can already watch the extended trailer here.
