Italy’s Shove Records (along with Mind Control Records and a few others) brings you a truly unholy alliance of sorts. What you’ll find in this 7″ split release by the two Danish bands are in fact two tracks of icy, tenebrous, desolate and annihilating blackened hardcore.
Copenhagen devastators HEXIS kick off the feat with Tenebris, two and half minutes of complete fucking annihilation that will have fans of the blackened post-hardcore of bands like Celeste and The Secret drooling for days. These two minutes steep in an endless shitstorm of blast beats and razorwire – ice-coated malevolent riffage that creates a thunderous backdrop to an utter war zone of bleak hardcore belligerence. Something that can bend into submission even the toughest spines.
The other track in the split – Applewhite – is the work of of another Danish brutal post-hardcore band, REDWOOD HILL. These guys bring to the table a much more shrouding and intelligible evolved hardcore formula. Surely still dark and bleak as fuck, their music obtains as much of its depth and darkness from black metal just as it does from Sludge and Doom, paving the way for a slower, more paced and comatose listening experience that brings to mind bands like Knut, Year of No Light, Amenra and Rorcal. Its five and half minutes swirl and twist, winding their way down a path of complete and obliterating destructive darkness from which there is seemingly no return.
All in all, what we have here is something short in length but quite memorable in substance. The work of two bands who, in a single spasm of terrifying rage, each have beautifully shown us two different faces of the same frightening and anguishing sonic medallion.
