BOTTOM FEEDER, Grinding Teeth

Raw Birth Records

Grinding Teeth, an accurately titled debut LP from Bottom Feeder, is one of the most raw and unrelenting albums I’ve heard in a long while. Opening with a peculiar sample to be followed by a brief, introductory drum fill, the vocals and guitars shriek together in an immediately punishing manner. No hesitation or mercy for a couple minutes when a brief, feedback-induced pause gives you a moment to catch your breath before the band returns with pummeling ferocity. Raining violence and cruelty, these Danish sludge underdwellers bring the misanthropic sound of Grief, attitude and rhythmic chaos of Eyehategod, the punishing intensity of Iron Monkey, and hinting to a hard-hitting, aggressive hedonism reminiscent of Black Flag and Discharge together to produce a non-stop sludge serenade soaked in feedback and disdain.

One punishing track after another, there is no consideration for the weak or soft-hearted during this 30-minute trip through hatred and disgust. The blues-bathed title track “Grinding Teeth” brings Side A to a close, leaving you with an ache like an addiction — anxiously awaiting to flip to the next side to continue your masochistic listening party of the album. Once the aural injection of “Tension” begins on Side B, the band attacks with their punk modicum before the lulling into a pace that demonizes a mellow groove beside the growling, gut-wrenching vocals that push and incite you. Continuing without remorse or regret, these foreigners finish their ruthless opus with a blood-thirsty vendetta, clawing their way towards the end continually faster and more vicious. And, as the end hits, they succeed in only keeping your fists clenched and your jaws tight with teeth grinding for more — an intense send-off before the feedback and lost signal finally go silent as the needle picks up. An unrestrained beating on your psyche, this debut LP from Bottom Feederdelivers, sure to punish even the most callous of listeners. –Rx
