I think a lot about the kind of world my daughters are growing up in, and I’m happy that in places like Vancouver there are so many “alternative” families that, for their generation, the concept of “alternative” probably won’t exist. We will not be the only black-and-leather clad parents dropping them off at school, and they won’t be the only kids who grew up on a steady diet of heavy music, who think that a house covered in death imagery is home. And it’s happening all over the world as our generation starts to procreate and pass our culture down to our kids – like in Ireland, where our writer Sean Fitzgerald has started a crust band with his two daughters. Bloody Ear is Putrefaction, age 6, on guitars and vocals and Rowan, age 8, on guitars, with their dad on drums (the initial name chosen by the girls was “Bloody Arse,” but they went with Bloody Ear instead). And from the sound of the music, you can hear that these girls have a history in this music and a natural ear for the grinding sounds and dark riffs that permeate their first released track, “Fear is for Prey.” I hope that any dude who’s equated being a “little girl” with being weak takes a listen to this track below, because these girls sound anything but weak!
