Tom – How did the HM2 fuelled furygrind outfit that is Human Cull come into existence?
Edd – We began out of the remnants of our former bassist’s goregrind project Gran Toucher. That turned into Terrorizer/early NxDx style thrashing grindcore and then became Human Cull for want of a more appropriate name for what we ended up doing. We’ve had 3 drummers throughout our development (shout out to Johnny for being a dude) and we are now onto our second bassist, Luke (farewell to Morrish – it’s been a pleasure). Sam does shouting and drumming and I (Edd) do shouting and guitarising.
Tom – I’ve seen/heard some Human Cull album teasers online and it’s sounding cracking. What made you decide to write and record a full length in a genre which is primarily dominated by 7″ splits/EPs?
Edd – We’d done a mini album in 2012 called ‘Split Second Extinction’ which lasts for 9 minutes and it was well received (at least to our faces), but we got a lot of comments about it’s length but fuck it, it does what it does; in the mean time we’ve done two more splits (a 7″ with Oblivionized and a cassette with Homolka which saw us experiment with a 13 minute sludge crawl). So basically we just felt it was time to do a more substantial set of songs and its not as if there aren’t loads of classic grindcore and crust 12″ albums out there from the annals of history.
Tom – Best gig you’ve been to? (grind or otherwise or both??)
Edd – One of the best gigs I’ve ever been to was one I attended with Sam last year. We went to see Melvins play a small venue called the Croft in Bristol. They were performing with the ‘full’ line up (two drummers) and I thought It was incredible.
Tom – Any plans for Euro/World/Cosmic tours? And were you sad when Pluto was declassified as a planet?
Edd – Doing a bunch of dates across the UK as the year comes to an end. Next April we hit the European mainland to drink heavily and play shows with Oblivionized (London). When I found out about Pluto I smiled to myself and whispered ‘Iced’.
Tom – Do you see yourself still smashing out grind when you’re old and grey?
Edd – Do I see myself being old and grey might be a better question… But yeah, I reckon I will still be spinning FETO if I hit 80. Might have to take it sitting down by then though.
Tom – Are you going to show me a good time in Bristol on Saturday or are you skulking off back to Exeter?
Edd – I’m not sure… There’s a good chance we’ll be ‘skulking’ back to our Devonshire lair. But our bassist lives in Bristol so you never know…
Tom – Are you a write at home kind of guy or jam it out in the practice room folk?
Edd – I’m both. I often come up with some half formed ideas that Sam and I then bash into proper grinding shape in our practice pad. We sometimes write songs entirely rhythmically, where I set riffs to stuff Sam’s doing. Those are all written in the practice room. Occasionally I’ll have a whole song that I’ll bring to rehearsal and it will remain relatively unchanged, but that’s rare.
Tom – Have you ever all tried downing an extremely strong coffee 15 minutes before playing a set? It’s great, you play faster.
Edd – No I haven’t but at Bleh Fest Sam necked a Jagerbomb straight before we played and I think the tempo went pretty nuts at that one.
Tom – Any other musical projects going on for any of you at the moment?
Edd – I’m in Confine (grindcore sort of stuff with Zac from Oblivionized, Rich from the Afternoon Gentlemen and Gets Worse and Reese, who is in Horsebastard some band called Corrupt Moral Altar) and Sam, Luke (our new bassist) and I are all in Disfortune (d-beat). Luke is also in a drone band in Bristol called Grim Iron Claw and Sam has a drone project called Vacuum Catastrophe which he does by himself, but I think he has plans to do some live stuff with Dan from Godsick (formerly Chemical Tomb) and Tom (ex-Witch Cult). That’s a lot of namedropping.
Tom – If you could take any CMA member out on a dinner date, who would it be and why?
Edd – I think it’s a toss up between you (Tom) and Reese. You are both extremely charming young men who I would like to get to know better.
