One of the raddest American black metal labels, Colloquial Sound Recordings, releases some of my favorite bands. This cassette label reminds of Touch & Go or Discord in the glory days – you knew if it was on one of these labels, it was black gold, and the same goes for Colloquial Sound Recordings. They have not put out anything that I have been disappointed with, because it seems that all of their bands are creating music on their own terms, and not trying to keep up with the Joneses or follow a fucking lame trend. One of their most recent releases that really impressed me is the cassette by This Station of Life, Antithetic. This music is ultra sick, minimal, cyco punk black metal that melts into your skin with each listen. I really dig the structure of their compositions; it’s almost like they allow the emotion of what they are creating to lead them down their creative path. At first, you might thing that this band’s music is simple, but trust me, it’s more complex then you think. This Station of Life use space as a sick ass instrument, so they give room for everything within a song to make sense. What gets me hyped about this band is their concept of melody, and how they use it in an eerie and perverse way. Then you have the guitar work that you will hear on Antithetic, which is, in simple lingo, totally motherfucking awesome, but not in an over the top sort of way. This Station of Life’s vocals are raw and primitive and ultra mad, with with a unhealthy dose of mayhem crusted onto every syllable. One thing that you will notice about this band is their very clear vision of what they are trying to manifest, and they accomplish that ten fold. This Station of Life brings something new to the universe because they make music that has no rules, just a giant black heart. On the real, check out the Colloquial Sound Recordings site, and stay tuned to CVLT Nation for more reviews of their awesome bands!
