Before the surgery channel and gory murder TV, most people did not see the inside of the human body. For those in the medical professions – the barbers and doctors – knowledge of our inner workings was shared through illustration. For centuries, our organs and vessels were mapped in ink and pencil, often with artistic license. Our energies were equally a part of the drawings, from our facial expressions to our alignment with the stars. Vibrant colors burst form our bodies as skin and flesh peel away to reveal muscle and bone. It’s fascinating to see the way the human body was depicted in the 4th century, the 17th century and the 20th century.
