I have observed tattoo culture really blow up in the past couple of decades. The trends have run the gambit from tribal to ironic to asian to homemade and everything in between. I’ve seen gorgeous sleeves in full color, a dancing pickle, lips on the neck and hummingbirds on the hip and tramp stamps aplenty. In the massive world of tattooing, it’s clear when you have found a master in a sea of reproductions. One such master is Alvaro Flores based out of Korpus Tattoo in Melbourne. Flores is truly an artist, whose unique creations coat skin in surreal geometric patterns that complement the human canvas and leave the wearer a walking installation. He builds kaleidoscopic mandalas out of intricate dot work, and his work is unmistakeable. In an age of stupid homemade ironic bullshit tattoos, I am so excited and refreshed whenever I see work that will be treasured, not regretted. Finding Flores’ work has just made me more determined to make my way Down Under, and has added several hundred to my prospective budget! After the jump, find a massive gallery of Alvaro Flores’ work…

How can this be posted without as much as a mention of Thomas Hooper?

Yes, clearly his pattern work is influenced by/in the same vein as Hooper. But I usually try to avoid making comparisons when I am talking about artists, and instead focus on what makes their work individual.
