Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LVIII
Curated by Batillus

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LVIII Curated by BATILLUS goes live today! Ever since we started this zine, we have respected this band’s creative output. That is why we are super stoked that they complied some outstanding tunes that we are sharing with you today! If you don’t know, now you know – they are on tour right now with the almighty WHITEHORSE. Check out what BATILLUS has to say about their mixtape below, and make sure to play it on TEN!

All four of us have a wide range of musical interests, and most of what we listen to in the tour van is not metal — we realized after a few years that it’s good to give one’s ears a break during the day when every evening is spent in a bar full of noise. Everything in moderation. So here’s a mix that is reflective of that side of things. Even though it may start off kind of heavy, listen to the end and you may find a few surprises.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LVIII Curated by Batillus TRACK LIST
1. Ministry – “N.W.O.”

2. Godflesh – “Veins” (This one and “N.W.O” are compact, agressively hooky, and minimal; which is the kind of heaviness that I’ve been wanting to go back to. I’ve been hearing too much of the opposite in recent years. -Willi Stabenau, bass)

3. Wire – “Lowdown” (I love the sound of the guitars on this track, and the sound of the room. . . “Pink Flag” is an album I never get tired of. -Greg Peterson, guitar

4. True Widow – “NH” (Really heavy shoegaze stuff. -Fade Kainer, vocals & synth)

5. Crowbar – “The Lasting Dose” (Album title says it all: “Sonic Excess in its Purest Form” -fk)

6. Lungfish – “Unfold The Leg” (Hypnotically simple riffs that are still catchy, and lyrics that could actually stand up on their own as poetry. -gp)

7. Low – “July” (This is one of my favorite Low songs; the way Sparhawk and Parker harmonize at 2:55 and the vibraphone counter-melody that enters shortly thereafter are absolutely exquisite. And our good friends Kowloon Walled City do an excellent cover of this song, to boot! -Geoff Summers, drums)

8. Elliott Smith – “Miss Misery” (A wonderful waltz decorated with moog and Smith’s signature layered vocals, I especially like how the drums seem to constantly shift from laid-back to forward-moving. -gs)

9. G.H. – “Earth” (This is some fucked up dub techno. -fk)

10. Sun Ra – “Ankhnaton” (Sun Ra’s arrangements are so wonderfully layered and cleverly constructed that you can still be surprised and energized by them after years of listening. -gp)

11. Greymachine – “Sweatshop” (Grimy. -fk)

12. Tom Petty – “Into the Great Wide Open” (This is just a great American rock song, the hook is irresistible. -gs)

13. Levon Helm (R.I.P.) – “The Mountain” (This is originally a Steve Earle song and the original is just as good (perhaps better) but I love the way Mr. Helm re-imagined the original’s lazy, sauntering waltz as a more-energetic straight 4/4. This song always takes me out west to Big Sky country. To, say, the forgotten majesty of an old mining town like Butte, Montana. -gs)

14. 16 Horsepower – “Praying Arm Lane” (I really love the banjo and the two-step feel of this song. -gs)

15. Louvin Brothers – “Cash on the Barrelhead”

16. Tommy Duncan – “In The Jailhouse Now” (I like this and the previous track because they’re great renditions of great songs. Country is also the best overall driving music. -ws)

17. Frank Wakefield & Buster Turner – “Leave Well Enough Alone” (Weirdly beautiful vocal harmonies like I’ve never heard in any other bluegrass music. -gp)

18. Skinny Puppy – “Worlock” (Classic. -fk)

19. The Caretaker – “When The Dog Days Were Drawing to an End” (Most of the music I listen to was made by people who are dead, so it makes sense that one of my favorite current artists would sound like something recorded by ghosts a hundred years ago. -gp)

6/1 – New Orleans, LA
6/2 – Lafayette, LA
6/3 – Austin, TX
6/4 – Little Rock, AK
6/5 – Columbia, MO
6/6 – Lincoln, NE
6/7 – Minneapolis, MN

6/10 – Chicago, IL
