If you’re looking for the musical embodiment of the anticosmic chaos you might have found it in the latest record of Blut aus Nord. 777 Sect(s) is like a razor-sharp blade at the throat of all positive emotions and feelings. To be honest, I didn’t have this band on my radar until I heard this record, but now I feel like being enlightened. Complex, chaotic and truly avant-garde Black Metal wasn’t that perfect since Fas – Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum of Deathspell Omega, which is really the only band Blut aus Nord is somehow comparable to. Not very surprising, Blut aus Nord are from France as well. Six songs that make your blood freeze and your heart die, this is what you get from 777 Sect(s).
Like I said, I ignored this band up until lately when I stumbled across this record. I’ve read their name a few times before, but it really did not appeal to me. Blut aus Nord could be translated with “blood from north”, in exactly this quite “unusual” grammar. Anyway, I guess I have another back catalogue to work through.
777 Sect(s) is a very cold, very exact record. The riffs are very unusual, but precise and certainly evil. Neo-classical composers, Kraut Rock, Psychedelic and Industrial music could have been an influence – or it’s all pure genius. The music works with disharmonies and quite “uncomfortable” measures. The effect it has: the songs sound incredible chaotic AND precise at the same time. Gruesome vocals complete the image of total insanity and mayhem.
Even though Blut aus Nord are extraordinary in their fast moments, what really drives me nuts are the slow songs and parts, pendig between sheer madness and a nearly ambient, epic mood. They’re like taking a deep breath before the next attack of harsh blast-beats and even sicker guitar work. Naturally, Blut aus Nord are tight as hell, there’s not even enough space for a piece of paper in between the different elements. I don’t know if you believe me anymore, since all the records I review here seem to be amazingly amazing, but what can I do – if I’m not into a record I don’t even spend enough time listening to it to review it properly. So: 777 Sect(s) IS amazing. Cold, evil, dark, disturbing – but amazing.
