One of my favourite memories of listening to music dates back to 2009. We played one single show in Sweden, that meant to drive overnight back to Germany. I had to drive and to stay awake I was blasting the fifth Shining album, Halmstad. Listening to this music while driving through dark Swedish forests was just such perfect combination of surrounding world and music, I’ll never ever forget that. Now the band around Niklas Kvarforth released a new record entitled VII: Född Förlorare and of course my expectations were high – especially since the last record, Klagopsalmer, didn’t amaze me as much as Halmstad. So could Född Förlorare bring back the horror once again?
You can watch the video for the track “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” from the VII: Född Förlorare album. Don’t watch it you can’t stand the sight of drug abuse and self-mutilation.
Shining have left the pure Black Metal pigeonhole a long time ago, if they ever were in there. Of course there are some musical references to Black Metal, but Shining are way more diversified. Bits of Black Metal, “normal” Metal, Sludge, “Black’n’Roll” and Nordic folk music are put together in a very sick, oppressive and frightening manner. Anxiety might very well be the overall theme of Född Förlorare. Listening to this record after a bad day would probably end you up killing everybody around you and then yourself. Sick, mean and depressive shit. All the lyrics are in Swedish, which I can not understand, but I’m pretty sure they’re all about death, suicide, pain and loss. Anyway, Född Förlorare is an amazingly heavy and dark record, maybe I do not like it as much as Halmstad, but that’s probably just because of autobiographical references. Definetely worth your blood.
