My uprising as a crazy little punk kid started in the early 80’s, & as I said in a recent post, one film that spoke to me was The Decline of Western Civilization – everything about this movie was my generation. Years later, other kids heard their calling to the movement & the film director Penelope Spheeris was there to capture it in the form of The Decline of Western Civilization Part III. Created in 1998, this documentary focuses on a group of street punks in Hollywood, plus she documents the bands of the day: Final Conflict, Litmus Green, Naked Aggression and The Resistance. Out of all the documentaries from this series, this one touched me on an emotional level the most. Penelope really gave a voice to youth that society tries to ignore & shows that no matter what you look like you should be treated with dignity. Also, normal society does not realize that these kind of punk tribes actually form real strong family bonds, even though to some they might seem dysfunctional – but who are they to judge? In my book, this is a revolutionary film created by an awesome director. Punk is A State of Mind & Punks do not Die, they multiply. So after the jump, check out this gnarly film The Decline of Western Civilization Part III.
