Invokation is the title of a 7″-EP by the German band NACHTS (“at night”), filled with 12 minutes of extraordinary, fast-paced and extremely grim Black Metal, written and played by a forsaken soul who calls himself Wiedergänger (“revenant”). As it happens, countless of shitty one-man-projects and abyssal bad rehearsal-room-bands made me extremely cautious when it comes down to releases like that, because more often than not there’s clearly to see why a band never leaves the status of being merely a project: it sucks. Fortunately this ain’t the case with NACHTS. Invokation clearly shows that Wiedergänger put a lot of thought, time and creativity into this release and is one further astonishing example of what Black Metal can be. Wiedergänger is active in the German Black Metal underground for years now, mostly in his role as an excellent, precise and sublime drummer. Best known might be his other one-man-project, Total Negation. Whereas Total Negation tends more towards depressive Black Metal with longer songs and sprawling compositions, NACHTS comes along a lot more aggressive and in a more direct manner. All four songs on this EP clock in below the three minute mark, you’ll look in vain for the excessive use of calm parts. This is right to the point, fast and belligerent Black Metal.
At the same time you can’t really call it raw (at least in its common “record review sense”). First, the production is quite clear, very cold. Second, the song writing is intelligent and precise as it is aggressive. Every single stroke on the guitar, ever little detail on the drums is right in its place. And thus Invokation creates a dense, taut and dark atmosphere. The vocals are very doleful, delivering the lyrical concept, which has a very philosophical, kinda occult approach. The lyrics are written in German.
