Thanks to MRR, I learned at a young age that there was a global community for the self expression known as Punk Rock. I got turned on to all sorts of killer bands from around the world, but I never knew about the scenes that were taking place in southern Africa during the late 70’s & early 80’s. I just watched Punk in Africa, and it totally opened my mind to the music of dissent they were creating. Growing up, I always thought we had so much to rebel against: Nuclear War, the Contras and Reagan. After seeing this film, I realized that the bands in southern Africa had so much on their plates. That being said, the bands of this area had messages I could relate to, but the music they were creating was on point! Now it’s your turn – check out the documentary Punk in Africa!
