Why go another Halloween with “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”? It’s a great song, no question, but they were even playing that in the store you bought your kid’s Monster High costume in. So if you are tired of releasing the bats and looking to freshen up your Halloween playlist, here are a few classics, but more often than not deeper cuts. I steered clear of any song that had “Halloween” in the title and went for songs which instead invoke the spirit of Halloween. It’s not all death rock – some industrial creeps in, so if you are afraid your friend with the ironic mustache is going to make fun of you for cranking it, then you should toss his skinny jean wearing ass in the trunk of your car. These songs are best heard loudly in the middle of the night when you are in no condition to be driving home.

London After Midnight – “Carry On…Screaming”
From the 1996 “Psycho Magnet” album. He’s knelt at your alter, he’s cut out his heart, he’s lived in you ruins, his pain is your art. For your submissive masochist Tinder date.
Xmal Deutschland – “Incubus Succubus”
One of this German band’s more classic songs. Doesn’t every one need a song about sex demons on Halloween?
Specimen – “Hex”
South West England’s answer to Christian Death casts their spell on you.
Samhain -“To Walk the Night”
You have listened to the Misfits every Halloween since High School – time to move on at least to Samhain, it’s not like I’m pushing “Twist of Cain” on you.
Leaether Strip – Satanic Citizen
The samples in this song are amazing. Play them for your Grand Mother.
Razed In Black – “Salem’s Demise”
This one is more about the mood. Reflecting back on the witches from your past.
Siouxsie and the Banshees – “Scarecrow”
Only seems right if you are going leave Bauhaus and the Cure off to at least have this one.
Rasputina – “Transylvanian Concubine”
From Their 96′ debut, when it comes to Classics from the 90s this is no where near as overplayed as “Black No. 1” or “This is Halloween”,
Christian Death -“Skeleton Kiss”
I might be in the minority on Valor, but it’s like Dio-era Black Sabbath – once you get past the fact it’s not Ozzy then you might begin to come around to the fact there are some good songs on “Mob Rules”.
Electric Hellfire Club – “Kiss the Goat”
If you are planning on spending your Halloween at home with a headful of acid like I did in ’96, you might want to skip this one or the night will get really weird on you – think Fear & Loathing meets Paranormal Activity. Though, on second thought, a demon-possessed Hunter S. Thompson might have been a lot of fun…who remembers 1996 any way?
