MIDNIGHT IN AMERICA – HARDCORE ANTI-FASHION

It’s truly unfortunate that what used to get these kids caned would now get these kids laid.  I used to faun all over the Anti Fashion chapter of American Hardcore: the originality of engineer boots covered in chains and bandannas, the flannel wrapped around the waist (later lamely associated with the dreadful Grunge scene), the self-cut fucked-up hair and the industrial chains-as-belts, it was all so  mind blowing to me at 14. The fact that it was all strictly for utility is the very essence of “hardcore”. The flannel for instance, was used as a sweat-towel, as shows were often sweaty affairs with no coat-checks. While I’ll always have love for The New York Dolls and The Adicts and all the bands that had a definitive style, the fact that these kids weren’t consumed with fashion is quintessential to Punk and DIY. These kids had it beyond goin on. Check out seamless anti-fashion after the fall
