Lewis Carroll’s Haunting Photographs circa 1856-1880

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, was a prolific photographer from the 1800’s. Of the 3000 photos he took in his lifetime, only 1000 of them have survived the test of time. More than 50% of his surviving pictures are of young girls; some of them have a creepy vibe for sure. Lutwidge captured the image of Alice Pleasance, who ended up as the inspiration for his book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. When I look at his photos, I wonder what kind of lives did these young girls go on to live? The sense of loneliness and despair is evident in many of these images, but that only adds to somber drama that I’m witnessing.
