This month sees the release of “The Sign Of The Son Of Man”; the debut LP by Nottingham heavy boys Dead In The Woods, on the rather promising Viral Age Records. Describing themselves as “His Hero Is Hawkwind” DITW layered their seriously heavy riffageddon with snarling vocals and some rather nice theremin abuse. It’s like early Baroness have commandeered a Martian flying saucer and are scorching the earth with lethal death rays. The band have recently split but the majority of them can now be found in new band Nadir whose recent gigs have seen them showcasing a style that sounds like a sludgecore take on Japanese psych legends Les Rallizes Denudes’ blown out legacy (yes really!)
There always seems to be a hardcore band doing the rounds that people are comparing to Void. It usually means they’re fast and a bit sloppy, but rarely does it mean that they even start to emulate that classic band’s unhinged creative flare or off the wall hooks. Well there’s a London band going by the simple moniker of No, who’s debut LP (out now on the excellent Static Shock records) sounds like a ten truck careening down a mountainside after losing it on the pass, with it’s bloodied but conscious driver screaming all the way down. But y’know, in a catchy way.
