Death’s Striking Wings Review

Label:SEPULCHRAL VOICE RECORDS

Utter Morbidity is emanated from Uppsala bastard-sons Degial, as ascendant death metal is contaminated by funereal airs to create ritualistic death metal of a superior cut.

Here, the old gods are not dead as invocations to past-masters are offered with reverence while Degial staunchly refuse to become victims to nostalgia. This is a 21st century metal record in every respect, but by rooting in the past, Death’s Striking Wings offers the sort of continuity that is rarely executed effectively.

Lyrically, orthodox Satanism and death worship are predominant themes with no-doubt a significant influence coming from the T:F:C/MLO ideologies. The theosophical grounding of the content helps ground the album and leads to analysis favouring a more cohesive interpretation of this record than the usual death-metal milieu. This is ultimately no simple mosh record and all the better for it.

Musically, high standards are maintained throughout with riffs all offering highest calibre hooks. Supernal lead work ties in with vital sounding rhythm sections giving an air of polish and superiority often lacking in similar artists.

Sweden is well known for the calibre of its death metal and this is a release that maintains this reputation. Anyone with a passing interest in the genre would  be well advised to get their hands on a copy of Death’s Striking Wings and revel in the purity of Uppsala metal of death.
