Reality 86’d is a film that documents the 1986 In My Head Tour featuring Black Flag, Painted Willie and Gone, filmed by Dave Markey. This documentary is funny to watch, because you see punk kids become Dead Heads. Painted Willie is made of two ex-members of the L.A. punk band SIN 34, and created some cool jammy music. What I do like about this movie, besides all of the off-the-meat-rack footage, is the way Dave captured the SST crew’s outlandish sense of humor. While watching Reality 86’d, I realized that Greg Ginn was a total musical freak – the way that dude played guitar in GONE you could see that he was on some freaky jazz shit. Roadies recognize roadies – it’s awesome seeing how hard these humans worked off and on the stage. Markey was also able to capture the state of youth culture at the time, with some improv interviews with random people. The Black Flag performances were cool; Henry was in good form, but there is something missing from this line up. Being a fan of SST from a young age, I’m stoked that this film was made, but I can see why this was Flag’s last tour. If you were not alive or old enough to be a part of this era, roll a fucking joint and watch Reality 86’d. Check out this blast from the past after the jump!
