Axel Void’s Unsettling Paintings Of Subjects Suffocating In Plastic

Don’t put the bag over your head! Being trapped inside of plastic is a fear that many of us have starting in early childhood, when the dangers of plastic bags are impressed on us by society at large. These eight oil paintings by AXEL VOID from his series “Sehnsucht” ask the question, forced or consensual? When I look at these paintings, all sorts of thoughts start racing through my mind…but what’s interesting is that none of these subjects seem to be in any sort of distress or discomfort. It’s as if by taking their breath away – one of our most fundamental and unconscious actions as a living thing – they are able to see a new way of being. His exhibit statement is that “this show gives emphasis to that confusion and state of wellbeing within our basic necessities, and longing for something else.” We expect our breath to happen, but we also spend our lives wondering what happens when it stops. “Sehnsucht” by Axel Void is now on view at BC Gallery in Berlin, Germany through August 15th.
